Principles and decision making in diet formulation

07/14/2016

The first step in diet formulation is to define the most economical net energy level for current ingredient and hog market prices. The nutritionist defines if the production system is marketing pigs on a fixed time or a fixed weight basis. The difference between these two scenarios is important because it changes the relative economic value of growth rate. The value of weight gain in a fixed time system is more economically valuable given the fixed constraint on number of growing days available. The nutritionist also needs to decide the goal of the nutritional program. Strategies for diet formulation range from maximizing performance and profitability to minimizing cost. Different strategies can account for the economic value of growth rate. Two strategies that focus on maximizing profitability, while accounting for the economic value of growth rate under fixed time scenario, are income over feed/facility costs and income over total cost. The first takes into consideration the feed and facility costs whereas the second takes into consideration fixed (i.e, sow feed cost, vaccines, etc) and variable costs (i.e., feed).

Summer Management for Late Weaners

07/14/2016

The necessity to stay competitive forces producers all over the world to continually analyze their performance and costs to drive continual improvement. Small changes in some indicators can have a big economic impact. The occurrence of late weaners is one of the variables that should be reviewed, understood and fixed when the incidence rate increases or the interval becomes extended. In many situations the cause and subsequently, the solution, can be identified and targeted for improvement. The goal of this article is to provide definitions to better understand the implications of a longer weaning-to-service interval and also provide a set of practical interventions.
